CORDA #1

I'm very happy to be contributing to the first issue of CORDA, a new biannual magazine published in London and exploring communal experience of connections in a time of new borders. Started in direct response to the Brexit vote, and edited by Livia Franchini with art direction by Sean P Haughton, CORDA publishes both writing and visual material.

My contribution has the title 'tanks rolled through our streets', and it is a borderless mashup of testimonies by young mother refugees to the US and 'below-the-line' commentary on the online article in which they were published.

Thanks to Livia Franchini for asking and for publishing this piece, and kudos to Livia and Sean for creating a space for writers & artists across Europe and elsewhere to "grieve/rage/celebrate friendship together in the wake of Brexit".

Join us on Tuesday 23 April 2024 in the Recital Hall at Technological University (TU) Dublin Conservatoire for the premiere of a new work - a sonic-poetic treatment of Ireland's housing data composed and performed in collaboration with David Bremner (piano) and Larissa O'Grady (violin). 'Capital' at Irish Museum of Modern Art

On Saturday 5 September I will present a new long poem with title 'Capital' at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). This is part of a programme of events for The People's Pavilion installation, a public outdoor space located on the museum's front lawn where people can meet safely in specially designed social distancing circles. From the event description: 'Capital' is a polyphonic poem composed of fragments of text from unattributed reviews of establishments on Talbot Street, publicly available on Google Maps. It has its roots in Makris’s longstanding interest in the shifts in language use, communication and identity brought about by digital media, and their implication on poetic discourse. The poem maps the street through the kind of public-private writing prevalent online (the reviews often stray into personal anecdote). It Reeks of Radio: the launch / the exhibition / early responses / a reading for Joseph M Hassett

The Old Physics Theatre at Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) was nicely full for the launch of my fifth book of poetry  It Reeks of Radio  (BLR Editions)  on 26 September 2023, where I was in public conversation with this year's UCD / Arts Council of Ireland Writer in Residence, Victoria Kennefick. It was lovely to see many old and new friends and colleagues attend what was a lunchtime event on a weekday. Victoria's astute reading of the book, her skillful hosting of the conversation and her probing questions facilitated a dive into several of the strands explored in the book.
